Seattle businesses throw away about 64,000 tons of food each year and spend roughly $7.8 million each year to dispose of this material as garbage.[1] Include food-soiled paper and that totals about 37% of all the waste generated by Seattle businesses.
But, there are alternatives. Consider donating edible foods to local food recovery programs and starting a food waste collection program at your business. Or, if your business has a garden or landscaped area, you may want to consider an on-site composting system.
